That´s What Is Happening When You Outbid A SWF......Hapag-Lloyd Said To Seek As Much As $2.4 Billion In Capital

No problem with overbidding NOL ( Temasek ) but when your consortium is in part backed by the taxpayer ( City Hamburg & HSH Nordbank ) it is getting "annoying"....Especially when the taxpayer had already to bail out HSH Nordbank with well over € 10 billion ( and counting / see States agree €13bn HSH bail-out ).... Will be interesting to see how long the public will tolerate this form of "patriotism" or should i better say "protectionism"....

Maybe some of the officials were blinded with the success in former interventions (Beiersdorf/Procter&Gamble and Norddeutsche Affinerie/A-Tec).... France must be jealous.......... :-)

TUI Sells Hapag-Lloyd Unit in 4.45 Billion-Euro Deal

Oct. 12 (Bloomberg) -- TUI AG, the German owner of Europe's largest travel company, agreed to sell Hapag-Lloyd to a Hamburg- based investor group in a deal that values the shipping company at 4.45 billion euros ($6 billion).

The Hamburg group, led by the city's government and logistics billionaire Klaus-Michael Kuehne, was the sole remaining bidder after Neptune Orient Lines Ltd. ( Temasek Holdings - the investment arm of the Singapore Government - is the largest single shareholder with a 68% holding ) dropped out on Oct. 10. TUI initiated the sale in March, giving in to investor pressure to focus on tourism.

The investor group, called Albert Ballin KG after a famous Hamburg ship owner, bid for the company to secure jobs and an important part of the city's maritime history. The group consists of the city of Hamburg (Hamburg alone has a holding of about 23 percent), Kuehne, private investment bank M.M. Warburg & Co., regional bank HSH Nordbank AG, and insurers Signal Iduna and Hanse Merkur.
Fast forward to today........

Nun zu der heutigen Schlagzeile.......

Hapag-Lloyd Said to Seek Up to $2.4 Billion Capital

July 9 (Bloomberg) -- Hapag-Lloyd AG, Germany’s largest container shipping line, is seeking as much as 1.75 billion euros ($2.4 billion) in capital from lenders and shareholders including TUI AG, two people familiar with the matter said

German banks will be asked to provide a 1 billion-euro loan backed by the federal government, one of the people said. TUI would shoulder 325 million euros and Albert Ballin 425 million euros, the person said. The Hamburg city, part of Albert Ballin, would pay 170 million euros, according to the person.

Doubling down.......Another interesting part is that TUI is still owning over 40 percent and has given Hapag-Lloyd significant credit lines.....The FTD has an estimate of only € 400 Million. According to Manager Magazin & TUI Deal Presentation ( Page 11) it is closer to € 1.4 Billion......

Hier mehr vom Handelsblatt Notruf in stürmischer See

Needless to say that TUI is already rated at JUNK...... I´ll bet that they already regret that they haven´t sold to Temasek......

Trade Update: Container Shipping "A Black Hole of Losses" Naked Capitalism

Cargo ships will carry 27 million fewer containers by year's end than they did in 2008 -- a reduction roughly equivalent to all of the cargo containers handled by the five busiest U.S. seaports in a typical year, according to London-based Drewry Shipping Consultants' Container Forecaster Report.

"There has never been a decline like this before. We have never seen numbers like these," said Neil Dekker, editor of the Drewry report. "The container industry is looking at a $20-billion black hole of losses. We can expect a lot of casualties."...

FT Alphaville

Market imbalances are in our view aggravated by the large newbuilding orderbook across most segments. These vessels will be delivered during difficult market conditions with most having been ordered at high rices. All shipping sectors will likely be affected by the high prices paid for newbuildings in recent years.

By our reckoning, these vessels will, on average, have to earn high freight rates to cover their purchase price and operating costs. With freight rates now very low in some segments, vessel operators look likely to incur substantial losses.

Consequently, we expect that the downturn for shipping will be severe and prolonged. We expect some relief on supply-side pressure, however, to come from widespread newbuilding cancellations or deferrals, and subsequent bankruptcies at weaker shipyards or cancellation of new ‘greenfield’ shipyard projects, primarily in China. We believe this is most likely to affect deliveries in 2011 and 2012

A sudden ratcheting upwards of the risk profile of these portfolios, which is what S&P expects, could mean a quadrupling in demand for regulatory capital under Basel II - quite a significant increase, particularly in these strained times.

The orderbook/current fleet ratio is indeed "stunning"......

I´ll finish with one HSH Nordbank figure ......

Abschließend eine wenig beruhigende HSH Nordbank Zahl

Shipping lending represents 7.4x HSH Nordbank’s equity at end 2007

There is a good chance that large party of the shipping financing arm will be "outsorced" to a Bad Bank.....

€ 5 billion Taxpayer Baliout for West LB........€ 23 Billion "Outsourced" In Special Conduit......

Paulson, Bernanke, King & Co have every reason to be jealous....No sovereign wealth funds or orchestrated takeovers like CFC/BAC needed....We have the German taxpayer to bail this stupid bankers, the non existent boards & oversight out....Make sure you read the summary of German banking incompetence to get a grip how disastrous the situation is. I assume when you combine all the guarantees, fresh capital etc backed by the "German taxpayer" it would be easily enough to kick UBS from 3rd place in the ranking of the biggest write downs so far.....

West LB

The owners of WestLB AG have reached an agreement to ring-fence substantial risks in the Bank´s structured portfolios. Securities with a nominal volume of roughly € 23 billion will be ring-fenced off the Bank´s balance sheet in a special purpose vehicle.

The financing of the special purpose vehicle will be secured by a guarantee from the owners of up to € 5 billion to cover any payment defaults. The owners will meet any possible losses from these securities portfolios in line with their shareholdings in WestLB up to an amount of € 2 billion, in compliance with their statement of January 20, 2008. Any further losses up to € 3 billion will be borne by the State of North Rhine-Westphalia

West LB

€ in Erfüllung ihrer Erklärung vom 20.1.2008.

WestLB, HSH Nordbank Bail Out $15 Billion of SIVs

Bring on the next state owned bailout.... At least West LB is gettig very close to some kind of bailout. HSH is doing much much better. Both HSH and West LB are in different ways owned through several state or municipal entities. Only 26 percent from HSH was sold last years to J.C. Flowers, a private equity firm. It is getting better. Düsseldorf seems to be the capital of incompetence in Germany. Düsseldorf is the headquarter from West LB & IKB which got a $ 7 billion ( and still counting) bailout earlier this year . I´ll bet that at the next carnival they will have something banking related on their trucks......

Ihren Sitz in Düsseldorf.

WestLB, HSH Nordbank Bail Out $15 Billion of SIVs Bloomberg
WestLB AG, Germany's third-largest state-owned bank, and Hamburg-based HSH Nordbank AG provided financing to more than $15 billion of troubled investment funds to prevent a fire sale of their assets.

WestLB provided a credit line for its $11 billion structured investment vehicle called Harrier Finance to repay commercial paper, the Dusseldorf-based bank said in an e-mailed statement today. HSH Nordbank said it will provide backup funding to cover all commercial paper issued by its 3.3 billion- euro ($4.8 billion) Carrera Capital SIV, spokesman Reinhard Schmid said in an interview.

NYT
FRANKFURT, Dec. 3 — In an effort to limit fallout from the subprime lending crisis in the United States, the German bank WestLB said on Monday that it would guarantee full liquidity to several of its investment vehicles that had put money into asset-backed securities.

WestLB, based in Düsseldorf and one of the regional German banks, or Landesbanken, has two major programs, known as Harrier Finance Funding and Kestrel Funding, that borrow money by selling short-term commercial paper to investors. They then invest the proceeds in higher-yielding securities, including ones backed by American mortgages.

WestLB also has three other similar investment vehicles, known as conduits. All five will have the option of drawing up to 25 billion euros, or $36.6 billion, as the short-term paper comes due.

> Put this gigantic figure in comparison with the numbers from the balance sheet...... No wonder Libor rates are surging around the globe.....

“This will ensure that there is no compelled liquidation of the assets in the SIVs,” said Armin Kloss, a WestLB spokesman, referring to structured investment vehicles. “We are also convinced that the assets that Kestrel and Harrier have could be more highly valued, but that the market is not ready for that.”

WestLB said in August that “less than 5 percent” of its investments was subprime-related, Mr. Kloss said. But trading in asset-backed securities has largely stopped, so a forced sale now would cost the bank dearly.

Like other banks and many politicians, WestLB is betting that the market will recover.

I suggest to read this from FT Alphaville related to the NAVRevenge of the SIV: still going down

Ich empfehle zu diesem Thema Revenge of the SIV: still going down vi FT Alphaville zu lesen.

HSH Nordbank, based in Hamburg, is taking a similar step to that of WestLB, covering all of the 3.3 billion euros that its vehicle, called Carrera Capital, has issued. The step has helped secure its stable credit ratings with Moody’s Investor Service and Standard & Poor’s.

“What we’re trying to do is avoid a write-down,” Reinhard Schmid, an HSH Nordbank spokesman, said. “We can do that with liquidity.”

Two German banks, IKB Deutsche Industriebank and Landesbank Sachsen, needed an outside rescue in August when their speculation in subprime-related securities went awry. But those problems far outstripped what much more stable banks like WestLB and HSH Nordbank are facing. IKB Deutsche and SachsenLB set up funds that were triple or quintuple the size of their capital on hand.

> I wouldn´t call West LB "stable".....

The British bank HSBC said last week that it would spend $35 billion to bring two vehicles it ran directly onto its books, effectively turning the bank into their guarantor of liquidity.

A similar principle underlies the so-"Superfund"— formally known as the Master Liquidity Enhancement Conduit — proposed by Citigroup, the largest sponsor of such vehicles in the world. Together with Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup is proposing that up to $80 billion be devoted to buying up mortgage-backed securities and holding them until the market relaxes.
